Launching July 31, 2021
Humanitarian Action Network will launch the Water Project on July 31, 2021. The Water Project will allow us to provide safe drinking water in an environmentally responsible way to people experiencing homelessness throughout Sacramento. We will start off providing drinking water to 160 people on a weekly basis, but our goal is to eventually serve 270 people weekly.
Most of the people we serve can be seen drinking out of old two-liter soda and other plastic bottles that are not safe for reuse. We have also heard of people drinking out of the river or out of handwashing stations (not potable water) out of desperation. As part of the Water Project, Humanitarian Action Network has purchased a water tank that is BPA-free and made of materials that are FDA-approved for water storage. Our water hoses are lead, BPA, and phthalates free for drinking water, and everyone we serve will receive a 3-gallon BPA-free water container for their personal use.
Even though 160 people is only a small fraction of the people experiencing homelessness in Sacramento, the Water Project will greatly reduce the level of plastic water bottles that will ultimately up in landfills and rivers. Each 3-gallon water container replaces 23 plastic water bottles. By refilling water containers with our water tank, we are keeping 3,680 plastic bottles out of the environment each week, or 15,947 plastic bottles each month! Even though we are a small organization, with your help we have the power to make a huge impact on our environment now and for future generations.
